Doha, Qatar: To mark Uruguay’s 200th Independence Day, three of Doha’s most iconic landmarks — the Sheraton Hotel, National Museum of Qatar and The Torch Doha were illuminated with the colours of the Uruguayan national flag, yesterday.

In a statement released on the occasion, the Embassy of Uruguay in Doha highlighted the significance of the anniversary, sharing insights into the country’s geography, history, and achievements.

The Oriental Republic of Uruguay declared its independence from the Empire of Brazil on August 25, 1825, following a determined struggle for sovereignty led by General José Gervasio Artigas, regarded as the father of the country.

Uruguay, described as a “great country in South America,” enjoys a privileged strategic position bordered by Brazil, Argentina, the Río de la Plata, and the Atlantic Ocean. Its very name, drawn from the Guaraní language, means “river where the bird lives,” a reference to the Uruguay River which marks much of its landscape.

The embassy also noted the country’s 220km of Atlantic coastline, home to the famed Punta del Este, South America’s most renowned seaside resort.

The capital, Montevideo, is a modern metropolis built around a natural harbour and lined with beaches along the Río de la Plata. Uruguay’s land, over 90% of which is used for agriculture and livestock, makes the nation a vital player in global food security.

With a population of 3.4 million, Uruguay produces enough food to supply more than 30 million people, including high-quality Halal-certified beef and lamb exported to Islamic countries.

The embassy emphasised Uruguay’s diverse and welcoming people largely of European origin is enriched by Afro-descendant cultural influences, particularly in music.  Uruguayans enjoy one of the highest life expectancies in the region and share a passion for outdoor life, family, and above all, football.

Internationally, Uruguay is recognised for its democratic stability, respect for the rule of law, and investment-friendly environment. It is the only country in South America classified as a full democracy by the 2024 Democracy Index and ranks high on the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index.

As a founding member of Mercosur and with free trade agreements extending to Mexico, Europe, and beyond, Uruguay continues to expand its reach as a hub for commerce, investment, and tourism.
