The State of Qatar has been actively engaged in supporting the Republic of the Sudan over the years, and has once again pledged to continue backing the country and helping its economy grow. Taking part in an international conference on Sudan, hosted by France on Monday, Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H E Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi said Doha will explore more investment opportunities in different sectors in Sudan.

Between 2010 and 2020, Qatar provided aid worth more than $500m to Sudan, in addition to non-governmental aid of more than $250m. Qatar said it will honour all its pledges made in the past for the support of Sudan, and has appreciated the efforts made by the Sudanese government to achieve security, stability and development for the Sudanese people. Qatar’s envoy at the conference said that not only Sudan has the potential to achieve sustainable growth, but it also has all the necessary ingredients to attract investors by improving the business environment and the economic openness.

At the international conference, Qatar also highlighted its experience of building 15 model villages in Sudan, with each village having a capacity of 10,000 people returning from refugee camps, drinking water facilities, educational institutions and health care.

Qatar-Sudan ties have gone from strength to strength in all areas since the opening of Qatar’s diplomatic mission in Khartoum in 1972. Leadership in both the countries has been continuously engaged to cement the brotherly relations between the government and the people of the two countries.

Last month, Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council H E Lieutenant General Abdulfattah Al Burhan in Doha to discuss the bilateral relations and means of strengthening them in all fields. Al Burhan also met Prime Minister and Minister of Interior H E Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani; as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs HE Dr .Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah.

Qatar has also played a key role in establishing peace in Darfur by hosting peace talks that lasted more than a year and yielded the Doha Document for Peace. Qatar’s efforts have helped establish peace in the entire region, and helped make it relatively stable. At the economic level, several Qatari companies are engaged in various sectors in Sudan.
