Doha, Qatar: As Europe commemorates the 76th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the European Union is using this year’s Europe Day celebrations to reinforce its message of peace, solidarity and stronger international partnerships amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.

In his statement to mark the anniversary, Ambassador of the European Union to Qatar, Dr. Cristian Tudor, said Europe Day remains a reminder that peace, cooperation and unity should never be taken for granted.

“The Schuman Declaration transformed a continent marked by conflicts into a project built on dialogue, partnership and shared prosperity,” Ambassador Tudor said.

“In today’s increasingly complex global environment, the European Union’s core message remains highly relevant: sustainable peace and progress can only be achieved through cooperation, respect for international law, and strong partnerships between nations and peoples.”

The Ambassador stressed that the EU continues to stand in solidarity with Qatar amid regional tensions, noting that European leaders have repeatedly condemned attacks targeting the State of Qatar and expressed support for its leadership and people.

“Following the beginning of the regional crisis and the Iranian attacks against Qatar, the EU at all possible levels has condemned in the strongest terms the attacks and expressed full solidarity with the State of Qatar,” he said.He added that the recent visit of the President of the European Council to Doha reflected the importance the EU places on its ties with Qatar.

“This is a time for a stronger partnership between the EU and Qatar, and I am convinced that soon we will have many more to discuss in this regard,” Tudor said.

This year’s Europe Day celebrations also reflect the EU’s broader priorities of resilience, strategic autonomy and openness, according to the Ambassador.

“In a world marked by instability and geopolitical pressure, the European Union must stand firm, protect its citizens, defend its values, and act with real strategic independence,” he said.

“That means strengthening our security, deepening our prosperity, and safeguarding the freedom of Europeans to shape the kind of society and democracy we want to live in.”

Beyond politics and diplomacy, the EU Delegation in Doha is also focusing heavily on people-to-people engagement through cultural initiatives, sports diplomacy, education and youth empowerment programmes.

Tudor said the delegation believes diplomacy should extend beyond formal meetings and instead foster stronger social and cultural connections between communities.

Among the initiatives highlighted by the Ambassador is the EU’s cooperation with Aspire Academy on sports diplomacy programmes aimed at promoting inclusion, intercultural dialogue and youth development.

“Sport can serve as a bridge between cultures and as a tool for inclusion, well-being and community-building,” he said.

The delegation is also continuing its support for media literacy and youth engagement through initiatives such as Media Connect StoryLab, organised in cooperation with EU MedBridge.

The programme encourages young journalists and content creators to engage in discussions on responsible journalism, storytelling and resilience in the digital age.

The Ambassador also pointed to the delegation’s recent outreach visit to the Shafallah Center during Autism Awareness Month as an example of how European values of dignity, equality and inclusion are being translated into practical engagement in Qatar.

“It was important for us to engage directly with children and young people and to support efforts that promote inclusion, understanding, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities,” he said.

Tudor noted that Europe Day activities this year are designed to remain accessible, inclusive and community-oriented, reflecting the EU’s core principle of “Unity in Diversity.”

On the diplomatic front, the Ambassador said EU-Qatar relations have evolved significantly since the signing of the 2018 Cooperation Arrangement, with both sides now seeking deeper cooperation in strategic sectors.

“Looking ahead, we see strong potential in areas such as digital transformation, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence governance, education, research, and innovation,” he said.

He added that regional security and diplomacy remain central pillars of cooperation, particularly as Qatar continues to play an important mediation role in regional affairs.

“The EU highly values Qatar’s role as a mediator and facilitator of dialogue in the region,” Tudor said.

The Ambassador also confirmed that negotiations on an EU-Qatar Strategic Partnership Agreement were launched in Doha during the Doha Forum in December 2025.

The agreement, he said, is expected to expand cooperation across multiple sectors including technology, innovation, education and security.

Beyond bilateral ties, Tudor highlighted the growing momentum in wider EU-GCC relations following the first EU-GCC Summit held in 2024 during Qatar’s chairmanship of the GCC.

“The second summit will take place later this year, and we are looking forward to a focused and result-oriented summit with tangible deliverables for the peoples of the two regions,” he said.

While energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of EU-Qatar relations, the Ambassador said the partnership is increasingly diversifying into new sectors.

Among the most promising areas, he noted, are smart technologies, digital education, AI governance, research collaboration and sustainable connectivity initiatives under the EU’s Global Gateway strategy.

“Education and youth engagement are equally exciting sectors,” Tudor said.

“Through academic exchanges, cultural initiatives, media programmes, and sports diplomacy, we are investing in stronger human connections between Europe and Qatar.”
