Doha: This year, 50 teachers of third to sixth grade from Qatar’s government schools, Teach For Qatar (TFQ) fellows and education specialists from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, participated in the seventh annual Qatar University-ExxonMobil Teachers Academy.

The program of the Academy concluded in Doha this week with a luncheon hosted by ExxonMobil Qatar and Qatar University (QU), said a release.

The academy is an intensive professional development program for math and science teachers that was established in 2012 by ExxonMobil Qatar and QU’s National Center for Education Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. It was launched to foster science, technology, education and mathematics (STEM) learning at an early age in Qatar’s education system.

Their efforts and engagement were recognized during the luncheon, which was attended by several senior representatives from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, QU, and TFQ.

The overall purpose of the academy is to enable teachers to better deliver math and science teaching by ensuring that they are well qualified in their particular specialism and able to convey enthusiasm for their subjects, inspiring students to become motivated learners. Six Doha-based educators and three instructors from the United States worked with the teachers to develop their subject knowledge and skills through specialized hands-on training.

A total of 310 teachers have taken part in the seven academies ExxonMobil Qatar and QU have provided over the years. These teachers are expected to reach over 13,000 students, creating a far reaching ripple effect on learning in Qatar’s schools.

“It is wonderful to see another Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy take place in Doha,” said Alistair Routledge, President and General Manager for ExxonMobil Qatar. “With the help of our partners, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Qatar University, the outcomes of the academy have become increasingly positive year after year.”

Dr. Abdullah Abu Tineh, Director, National Center for Educational Development- NCED at Qatar University said during the luncheon “It gives us great pleasure to celebrate the extraordinary relationship that Qatar University’s National Center for Educator Development shares with ExxonMobil Qatar with every successful year of the Qatar University-ExxonMobil Teachers Academy.”

“The Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy aligns with our objective at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education of providing Qatar’s students with a quality learning experience that will prepare them for the future,” said Hissa Al-Aali, Director of Training and Educational Development Center at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
