Ankara: A total of 104 coup plotters were killed after a bid to bring down the Turkish government, the acting army chief said on Saturday.

"The coup attempt has been foiled," General Umit Dundar said on television, adding that 90 people -- including 41 police and 47 civilians -- "fell martyrs." The remaining two were military officers.

He also said many army commanders were taken by the coup plotters to "unknown locations".

Dundar said coup attempt "was rejected by chain of command immediately".

"The armed forces is determined to clear the army of members of parallel structure," he said, referring to loyalists of US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen blamed for orchestrating a coup to topple the government.
