World leaders hail Qatar’s key role in US-Iran breakthrough

Doha, Qatar: Qatar’s diplomatic efforts have drawn widespread international praise following the agreement on a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, with world leaders crediting the State of Qatar and other mediators for facilitating a breakthrough seen as a potential turning point for regional stability.

The world leaders welcomed the agreement and highlighted the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement, while commending the mediating role played by Qatar and Pakistan alongside other partners in advancing negotiations toward de-escalation and dialogue.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister H E Shehbaz Sharif, whose government helped facilitate mediation between Iran and the United States leading to the announcement of a memorandum of understanding on Monday, expressed his gratitude to Qatar’s leadership for its support in advancing diplomatic efforts that contributed to the agreement.

In a post on X he said, “We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our brothers in this mediation effort, the great leadership of State of Qatar, for their support in reaching this agreement.”

A joint statement by leaders of Australia, Canada, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom issued on the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran also welcomed the agreement and praised Qatar’s role in supporting the diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving it.

It reads, “We warmly welcome the announcement of the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran. We congratulate the United States, the Iranian government and all those involved, including Pakistan, Qatar and all other mediators, on this diplomatic breakthrough.”

Turkish President H E Recep Tayyip Erdogan also welcomed the agreement, commending Qatar for its efforts in facilitating the diplomatic process that led to this understanding. President Erdogan expressed his thanks in a post on X to the leadership of the US and Iran, as well as Pakistan, for their mediation efforts. He also expressed appreciation for the support provided by the State of Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the diplomatic initiatives.

Welcoming the agreement between the US and Iran, British Prime Minister H E Keir Starmer said that it represents a very important step towards ending the war, ensuring regional stability, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, Starmer praised the efforts of international mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan, as well as other parties who contributed to pushing the negotiations in this direction. “I warmly welcome today’s agreement reached between the United States and Iran.

This is a hugely important step forward in ending the war, ensuring regional stability and re-opening the Strait of Hormuz. I congratulate President Trump and the mediators from Pakistan, Qatar and elsewhere who have contributed to this breakthrough,” Starmer said in the statement. 

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also appreciated the signing of MoU and thanked the mediators, in particular Qatar and Pakistan. She said, “Our sincere thanks go to all the mediators, in particular Qatar and Pakistan, who made this agreement possible. This opportunity for peace must be seized: as in the past, Italy is ready to support the diplomatic process towards a comprehensive agreement.”

Canadian Prime Minister H E Mark Carney also welcomed the agreement and expressed his  gratitude to Qatar and partners who facilitated the negotiations. In a post on X he said, “Canada welcomes the new agreement between the United States and Iran. We extend our gratitude to Pakistan, Qatar and regional partners for their indispensable roles in facilitating negotiations.”  

Finnish President H E Alexander Stubb praised the agreement and commended the mediation efforts that helped bring the parties to an understanding. In a post on X, he said, “Congratulations to everyone involved, including Pakistan, Qatar, and the other mediators. This agreement paves the way for ending the war and opening the Strait of Hormuz, which will have a significant impact on the region and the global economy.”

Armenian Prime Minister H E Nikol Pashinyan, Dutch Foreign Minister H E Tom Berendsen and British Foreign Secretary, H E Yvette Cooper also put out statements on social media welcoming the announcement and commending the mediation undertaken by Pakistan, Qatar and other countries involved.

President of the Lebanese National Assembly, Nabih Berri, yesterday, welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) announced between the United States and Iran.

Berri praised the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the State of Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Arab Republic of Egypt in helping secure the agreement, which lays the groundwork for security and stability across the region, including Lebanon.

In a statement issued by the Lebanese parliament, the house speaker expressed appreciation to both Washington and Tehran for insisting on the inclusion of a binding provision to halt Israeli attacks on all Lebanese territory. He added that such a provision would help safeguard Lebanon’s sovereignty across its territory.
