IT was once held that the Western nations and their leaders lent unwavering support to Israel, extending political shelter in international forums and actively bolstering its military preeminence. However, the protracted conflict in Gaza has unveiled a transformation in Western leadership from mere support to a distinct era characterized by the veneration of Israel.
The sanctity bestowed upon Israel, particularly among Western leaders (notwithstanding the sentiments of their respective populations), raises a critical question: how could a nation, endowed with such veneration, flout international humanitarian laws, the rules of war, and contravene numerous international treaties by dropping over 25,000 tonnes of explosives on civilians in Gaza?
In the 34th day of the Israeli offensive on Gaza, the toll of casualties soared, with over 4,300 children, along similar figure of women and the elderly, falling victim. The overall tally since the commencement of the aggression on October 7 reached a staggering 11,000, with 27,000 wounded and extensive destruction of residential units, educational facilities, healthcare institutions, and places of worship. Notably, Israel persists in targeting vital infrastructure such as water wells, bakeries, electricity grids, internet and communication networks, as well as silencing media and journalists to obstruct factual reporting, ren-dering living conditions in Gaza untenable and coercing inhabitants to evacuate, thereby denying them humanitarian aid.
Despite these egregious actions, a palpable hesitancy pre-vails in speaking out against Israel, given its elevated status akin to a deity in the eyes of Western leaders. Criticism and objections appear futile, as their capacity to address Israel’s deeds or rhetoric proves inadequate, leaving them only able to rationalize and echo the pronouncements of the deified nation.
Over the span of eight decades, numerous United Nations resolutions have been promulgated, yet none have been adhered to, thanks to the overarching political cover provided by the United States and Western powers. Israel has effectively asserted control over the notion of international legitimacy, ren-dering international laws and global agreements bereft of meaning within a morally paralyzed international system.
Even established media outlets in the Western world, including Britain, America, and various European countries, have exhibited a reluctance to report on the war on Gaza. This sanctity has been meticulously constructed by Zionism over eight decades, portraying itself as a victim while perpetrating crimes against the Palestinian people. Regardless of the extent to which Israel inflicts harm, destruction, or displacement, it remains a pariah detested criminal entity in the region. There is an undeniable certainty that the repercussions of today’s actions will be reaped tomorrow, and the Palestinian people will eventually realize their aspirations, liberating themselves from the yoke of apartheid and establishing an independent state. The ongoing crisis in Gaza serves as a stark revelation, laying bare the profound affliction that the global human conscience endures.
