Qatar U-19 players celebrate after Mohammed Waad scored their winning goal against Valenciana in their opening match of the COTIF International Tournament in L’ Alcudia, Valencia, Spain on Saturday.
Alcudia, Spain: Mohammed Waad converted from the penalty spot in the first half as Qatar Under-19 team pulled off a thrilling 1-0 win over Valenciana in the opening match of Group A in the L’ Alcúdia International under-20 Football Tournament on Saturday.
The tournament, also known as COTIF is being held in L’ Alcudia, Valencia, Spain.
With this result, Qatar starts leading Group B with three points, while the Valencian team moves to the last position waiting for the debut of Morocco, Russia and Uruguay, other rivals in this year’s COTIF.
Qatar will meet strong Uruguay counterparts in their second match today, followed by a clash against Morocco which will take place tomorrow.
Russia will be Qatar’s final opponents in Group A on August 2.
The tournament features 10 teams including Argentina, Mauritania, Murcia and Venezuela.
The COTIF tournament, originally known as L’Alcúdia International Under-20 Football Tournament, is an annual football competition for youth teams, open to both clubs and national and autonomous teams.
The tournament is expected to provide plenty of match practice and international exposure to Qatar juniors who will take part in the AFC Asian Cup to be held in Indonesia from October 18 to November 4.
