Doha, Qatar: The General Directorate of Endowments at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has received a series of new charitable contributions amounting to QR392,650 in support of the “Relief of Distress” endowment fund. The donations, made by a number of benefactors, will be managed under the Directorate’s supervision as part of the Waqf fund for righteousness and piety.

The announcement came during an episode of the “Dhukhr” programme, organised by the Directorate in collaboration with the Qatar Media Corporation. Broadcast weekly every Sunday during the holy month of Ramadan, the programme highlights key endowment initiatives and promotes opportunities for public participation in impactful charitable projects.

The endowment aims to transform individual donations into a sustainable charitable system, ensuring continuous support for those in need. By investing endowed assets, whether financial or real estate, the initiative generates ongoing returns that are directed toward alleviating hardship cases in coordination with relevant authorities, ensuring assistance reaches eligible beneficiaries through structured institutional mechanisms.

Mohammed Abdullah Al Harmi, Director of the Investment Department at the General Directorate of Endowments, noted that the growing engagement of donors reflects the deeply rooted culture of generosity within Qatari society, particularly during Ramadan.

He emphasised that waqf represents a unique model of philanthropy, based on preserving and investing the original asset while channelling its returns toward various charitable causes.

Al Harmi further explained that the funds dedicated to the “Relief of Distress” endowment are invested according to carefully studied economic principles and approved Sharia guidelines, ensuring sustainability and long-term impact in supporting vulnerable groups.

He added that such endowments embody the concept of ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), providing continuous rewards for donors while delivering lasting benefits to beneficiaries. The Directorate remains committed to managing and growing these assets to maximize their returns across various charitable sectors.

Expressing appreciation to all contributors, Al Harmi stressed that acts of kindness benefit both individuals and society, highlighting the enduring value of charitable giving.

Historically, waqf has been a cornerstone of Islamic civilization, supporting a wide range of social and humanitarian services, including aid for the needy, healthcare, education, and public services. It continues to play a vital role in promoting solidarity and social cohesion.

The General Directorate of Endowments continues its efforts to strengthen the culture of endowment through awareness initiatives such as the “Dhukhr” programme, encouraging individuals to contribute to sustainable charitable projects that benefit future generations.

The Directorate also called on members of the public to participate in endowment initiatives through various channels, including online platforms, mobile donation services, and dedicated hotlines, making it easier for donors to contribute to ongoing charitable efforts.
