Pittsburgh: Neil Walker blasted a game-winning home run to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 1-0 pitcher’s duel win over the Detroit Tigers in 11 innings yesterday.
Walker took reliever Jose Ortega deep in the top of the 11th inning to break up what had been a scoreless contest. Walker finished 3-for-5.
Detroit starter Rick Porcello struck out a career-high 11 batters in eight innings and Pittsburgh’s Jeanmar Gomez worked seven innings before both handed it off to their bullpen. Jason Grilli picked up his Major League-leading 21st save of the season in the victory.
In Toronto, Brian McCann hit his second home run of the day in the 10th inning to lead the Atlanta Braves past the Blue Jays 7-6.
McCann’s blast in the sixth put Atlanta up 6-5, and after Toronto tied it in the seventh, he put the National League East-leading Braves (31-20) ahead for good.
In New York, the Mets stung the Yankees late for a second consecutive night as they beat their cross-town foe 2-1.
The Mets rallied from a 1-0 deficit against closer Mariano Rivera (pictured) as David Wright delivered a game-tying single before Lucas Duda won it with his own single.
The Mets honoured Rivera, the all-time leader in saves, at their home Citi Field prior to the game before handing him the first blown save of his final season.
Matt Harvey tossed eight innings and struck out 10 batters for the Mets, while Yankees’ starter Hiroki Kuroda pitched seven scoreless innings and left with the 1-0 edge.
