Qatari candidate for the position of Director General of UNESCO, Dr Hamad Al Kawari, has emerged as the strongest front runner for the coveted post, according to The Diplomatic magazine of Netherlands. The magazine, which is the very first diplomatic magazine in the country, considered Dr Al Kawari as the best among the nine candidates.
UNESCO is selecting a successor for Irina Bokova, its current leader and the interviews for the post took place on April 24.
France, China and Qatar have emerged as serious contenders. However, France and China face an obstacle as both European and Asian officials have recently led the organisation. Paris is also the host of UNESCO’s headquarters.
Al Kawari become a consensual candidate of GCC countries since his nomination for the position by Qatar in March 2016, Dr Al Kawari has also won support of a number of countries representing various continents Africa, Europe, Asia and Americas.
Along Dr. Al Kawari there are three Arab candidates from Iraq, Egypt, and Lebanon. There are other candidates from Azerbaijan, Viet Nam, China, Guatemala, and Audrey and France
