Al Rumaihi impresses on day one of Trap event

Jacopo Cipriani of Italy and Jiri Liptak of Czech Republic are tied in the first place while Qatar’s Olympic-bound Mohammed Al Rumaihi is in the joint third position at the end of the three rounds of the Men’s Trap event at the Qatar Open Shotgun Championship.

Yesterday at the Losail Shooting Range, Cipriani and Liptak, both shots down 71 targets in three rounds of 25 each to head into the second and final day. 

2008 Olympic Games gold medallist David Kostelecky of Czech Republic, a five-time Olympic veteran, was in the joint third place with Al Rumaihi, while Erik Varga of Slovakia, Alessandro Chianese of Italy, Aaron Heading of Great Britain and Marian Kovacocy of Slovakia are in the fourth place.

Besides Al Rumaihi, other Qatari shooters who did well on the first day, include Rashid Hamad Al Athba, Mohammed Kheijam and Saeed Abusharib. 

Rashid shot down 66 clay pigeons to be in the 12th spot while Mohammed and Saeed were in the 22nd 24th spot, having brought down 65 and 64 targets respectively. The final rounds of qualifying will be played today followed by the medal rounds. 15 Qatari shooters are taking part in the event in which several Olympic and world champions are seen in action. 

Several Tokyo bound shooters are taking part in the event having the Olympics in mind. Over 200 shooters from 39 countries are taking part in the eight day event.

Meanwhile in the women’s section, Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova of Slovkia emerged as the leader after day one action having missed just three targets out of the 75 she aimed at  yesterday at the shooting range. Fatima Galvez Marin of Spain is in the second spot while Alessandra Perilli of Sammarinese is the third place. 

Mopsi Veromaa of Finland, Erica Sessa of Italy and Kirsty  Hegarty of Great Britain are all in the race to qualify for today final round. Today two rounds of qualifying will be followed by the medal rounds.

Kholoud Al Khalaf of Qatar is in the 17th place and is vying along with 28 shooters to make it to the final rounds. Six top shooters from both the men’s and women’s section make it to the medal rounds.
