Doha: Qatargas League side Mesaimeer yesterday scripted an upset by beating Al Ahli 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out to advance to the next round of the Emir Cup.
At the end regulation time, both teams yesterday were locked in a goalless draw and the tie-breaker was introduced at the end of the 90-minute period to break the impasse.
Both the teams had their share of chances but could not find the net in the first half and it continued the same way in the second half at the Qatar SC Stadium.
The clash between two had its share of exciting moments in the first half with Al Ahli having a slight edge with 66 percent ball possession.
In the second half, Al Ahli dominated but could not find the net while three Mesaimeer players found the net and one was far from the mark.
Mesaimeer will take on Al Sailiya in the next round match, with the winner meeting Al Gharafa in the quarter-final.
The Emir Cup competition is contested by QSL and Qatargas League clubs.
The third round will be played on April 28 and 29 while the fourth round games are staged on May 3 and 4. The semi-finals will be played on May 11 and 12.
The final will be played on May 19.
The first four finishers in the QSL have earned a place in the quarter-finals, while the remaining eight teams will feature in the pre-quarters and second round.
Al Sadd is one of the four teams which has been seeded directly into the quarter-finals along with QSL champions Al Duhail, Al Rayyan and Al Gharafa.
The winner of today’s second-round clash between Al Kharaitiyat and Al Shaniaya, faces Umm Salal in the pre-quarter-final with Al Duhail clash next on the cards.
