Doha: Qatar’s Faris Ibrahim won the gold medal in the 96kg category at the Qatar International Cup weightlifting competition yesterday while qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games.
The 21-year-old two-time Junior World Champion and a silver medallist at the 2018 Asian Games, successfully lifted 404kgs to push Iranian Kianoush Rostami to second place.
Rostami, 2016 Olympics gold medalist at 85kg category, has kept his hopes alive for winning the 2020 Olympics quota.
Rostami, had a good start in Qatar, lifting 178kg in the snatch category with Ibrahim lifting 176kg.
In the clean and jerk, Rostami hoisted 210kg in the first move and followed it up by lifting 220kg and 225kg in the next two. However, the Qatari lifter, silver winner at the 2019 World Championships successfully lifted 228kg to secure gold medals in this and the overall title.
Ali Miri of Iran won the overall bronze with a total of 371kg (162kg in snatch and 209kg in clean and jerk).
The Qatar International Cup which kicked off on December 19 will end today.
Some 150 lifters from 44 countries have participated in the event which is also a qualification for the 2020 Olympics.
