DOHA: Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) commemorated the World Family Doctor’s Day with staff at health centres.
The celebration of the day on May 19 is in recognition of family doctors to highlight important issues and the work performed in supporting healthcare in the local communities, the nation and around the world.
Dr Shawqiya Salman Al Majid, Consultant Family Medicine and Manager of Umm Ghuwalina Health Centre, explained the importance of the family medicine speciality.
“Our job is to help and serve families. A family doctor is concerned about the family, treating common diseases and informing members on how to avoid chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.”
She also spoke about her daily routine at the health centre. “As Health Center Manager, my job consists of dealing with possible issues between employees and other daily matters at the centre”.
Dr Shawqiya also works in clinics where she is directly connected with patients. “Being there for patients is one thing I enjoy the most when they seek our care”.
She said part of her job is giving patients advice to have a healthy lifestyle and prevent complications in diseases.
“We have realised that our health centre needs to be expanded to facilitate better care for patients. This two-store extension will give more space and allow opening more services to offer the best quality of care to our patients”, she added.
The appointment system is a great advantage for patients. “Through this innovative system, we are reducing the waiting time of our patients, which is an amazing advancement since the patient satisfaction is our main aim and goal.”
Dr Shawqiya also checks suggestions from patients. “I review and read their comments and try to improve and attend to their requests. We have very good relations with our patients because we consider them part of our family. We usually receive calls at home asking for recommendations or help. We are happy to serve them and that is our job satisfaction.
“We have the same thinking among the staff at the health centre. We are members of a big family. The Umm Ghuwalina Health Centre is our second home where we spend more than seven hours a day. Here we care about each other and understanding everyone’s needs and providing support is among our daily duties,” she added. The Peninsula
