Doha: Reigning champions Argentina thrashed Uruguay 3-0 to register their second victory at the Qatar Ooredoo World Padel Championship 2021 in Doha, yesterday.
A total of 16 matches were played in men and women’s fields on second day of the event, underway at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
Ten-time champions Argentina, who crushed Mexico in their opening men’s Group B match on Monday, continued with their fine form taking just 41 minutes to drub Uruguay.
Federico Chingotto and Juan Tello took Argentina ahead blanking Uruguay’s Diego Sebastian and Andre Veiga Trindade 6-0, 6-0. Martin Di Nenno and Maximiliano Sanchez overcame the duo of Higor Andres and Juan Ignacio 6-1, 6-0 for a 2-0 lead while Agustin Tapia and Franco Stupaczuk wrapped up a clinical victory, brushing aside Martin Araujo De Lizarza and Juan Bautista Oratorio Larrechea 6-2, 6-2.
Also yesterday, hosts Qatar suffered their second defeat going down against Italy 3-0 in 55 minutes.
Riccardo Sinicropi and Lorenzo Di Giovanni took the lead beating Qatari duo of Mohammed Abdulla and Mousa Shanan 6-3, 6-2. Michele Bruno and Cattaneo Daniele extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mohammed Saadon and Abdulaziz Saadon. Simone Cremona and Marcelo Capitani sealed victory beating the pair of Abdulla Ali and Issa Shannan 6-2, 6-2.
Qatar, who lost to Belgium on the opening day, will play their final Group C match against Brazil, who won both their opening matches.
Brazil’s Lucas Campagnolo, however, said the home side will be a tough nut to crack, today.
“The match against Qatar will not be easy as they will be playing in front of their home crowd,” said Campagnolo.
“We are ready and we look forward to presenting a special show and enjoying this match before the quarter-finals,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Qatar Tennis, Squash and Badminton Federation, (QTSBF) Nasser Al Khelaifi said the attendance of the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the opening day confirms the unlimited support of H H the Amir in promotion of sports in the country.
Al Khelaifi also expressed his appreciation to President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, (QOC) H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, for his support for the championship and his attendance of some of the competitions on the first day.
