Gymnastics Association of Philippines President praises Qatar for hosting 'wonderful' championships

Doha: President of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) Cynthia Carrion-Norton praised the excellent organisation of the 9th Senior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships, currently underway here at the Aspire Dome.  

The championships, which feature several top MAG and WAG gymnasts including the Philippines’ two-time world champion Carlos Yulo, started on Wednesday. 

“Qatar’s capability in hosting major international sports events is unmatched and brilliant. The Asian Championships is a wonderfully managed competition,” said Cynthia, who is also a Council Member at International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).    

“I’ve had visited and attended several gymnastics competition in Qatar. I can only say that Doha is the best destination for other sports as well. The country is hosting the Arab region’s maiden FIFA World Cup, which is itself a great achievement.”

Cynthia, who is also an Executive Board Member at Asian Gymnastics Union, also thanked Qatar Gymnastics Federation President Ali Al Hitmi for the excellent hospitality. 

“I always feel at home in Doha. We are treated with utmost care like family members. I extend my thanks to Ali (Al Hitmi) for the friendly and generous reception given to all visiting officials and gymnasts,” added Cynthia. 

Five Asian teams of four gymnasts (MAG) will be eligible including six from the All-Around competitions while the four WAG teams of four gymnasts besides eight from All-Around events will be hoping to book a berth for the Worlds scheduled to be held in Liverpool (United Kingdom) from 29 October to 6 November.

The competition will conclude tomorrow.
