Doha: President of the Doha-based International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) Mohammed bin Hanzab underlined that the translation of the “Global Guide on the Security of Major Sporting Events” into the other five official United Nations languages represents an advanced step aimed at universalising the protection of major sports events against the threats of organized and cyber crimes and violent extremism.
The Guide, launched last year, became available on the website of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office in six official UN languages: Arabic, Chinese, English French, Russian, and Spanish, the native languages of almost 3 billion of the worlds total population.
Bin Hanzab said that the Global Guide will reach more decision-makers and stakeholders around the world, which means generalizing the benefit of this first-of-its-kind international reference in the field of sports safety and security, which supports policies and decision-makers to face potential threats and help host and organizing countries for sports events at all games.
The Guide is a major milestone of the “Global Program on the Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism” which is the first UN initiative in the field of sport in general and the safety and security of major sporting events in particular.
It provides hosting nations with a reference document showcasing all the forms of technical assistance available at the international level, as provided by international and regional organisations, as well as sport bodies and specialised stakeholders.
