Action from from QNB Stars League (QSL) play-off match between Al Kharaitiyat and Al Wakrah at Al Ahli Stadium yesterday.
Doha: Al Kharaitiyat managed to hold on to their place in the QNB Stars League (QSL) as they won the play-off battle with Al Wakrah 2-1 at the Al Ahli Stadium here yesterday.
The match between Al Kharaitiyat, which 11th in the recently concluded QSL and Al Wakrah, the Qatargas Second Division runners-up, got off to a fast pace.
Al Kharaitiyat went into the lead through Rachid Tiberkanine in the 17th minute and consolidated the lead through Majid Salmeen in the 73rd minute.
Al Wakrah salvaged some pride with a late goal from Anthony Bassey in the 86th minute.
Al Kharaitiyat players’ joy knew no bounds, whereas their Al Wakrah counterparts were crestfallen at the final whistle despite dominating the game with 56 per cent ball possession.
Al Kharaitiyat surged ahead when Tiberkanine latched on to a long through ball and neatly finished past Al Wakrah goalkeeper Mohammed Enyas. The Moroccan striker took advantage of a disorganised rival defence and beat his marker Mohammed Faris before unleashing a placing shot.
Al Kharaitiyat doubled their lead through Majid’s solo effort and Bassey reduced the margin for Al Wakrah with a free-kick that went in past a diving goalkeeper Ahmed Sofyan. Al Kharaitiyat were assured of the 11th spot following their 3-2 victory over Qatar SC in Week 21, while Al Wakrah finished second behind Al Shahania, the Second Division champions, who will feature in next season’s QSL.
