Qatar defeated Brazilian club Madureira 2-1 in a friendly encounter in Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro, on Sunday.

The Asian champions fought back after the home team took the lead in the early minutes of the second half to secure the win in the match which was not open for public at the Portobello Resort football field.

The Qatari team camp is based in Portobello, Rio de Janeiro, where the team is completing its  preparations ahead of the Copa America.

This was Qatar’s second friendly match in their run up to the Copa America, which will be held in Brazil from June 14 to July 7.

Qatar, last Wednesday, met a strong Brazil side in an international friendly in which they lost 2-0 at the Mane Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia.

Qatar play in Group D, along with Argentina, Paraguay and Colombia in the South American football extravaganza.

Meanwhile, the hosts, Brazil thrashed Honduras 7-0 on Sunday in a show of strength in its last warm-up match ahead of the Copa America.

A confident Brazilian team, led by veteran Dani Alves, shrugged off the disruption caused by the loss of star player Neymar who injured his right ankle in their friendly against Qatar.

Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus scored two goals against Honduras, including the opener after only six minutes. Thiago Silva, Philippe Coutinho, David Neres, Roberto Firmino and Richarlison also scored.

Brazil plays Bolivia in the tournament opener on Friday. Brazil will also face Venezuela and Peru in Group A. Qatar will meet Paraguay in their first Group D match on Sunday.
