DOHA: Key players Almoez Ali, Akram Afif, Basam Al Rawi and Abdullah Abdulsalam will miss the Asian Games in Indonesia as they will focus on the AFC Champions League (ACL) quarter-finals, Qatar Football Association has announced.
Coach Unai Melgosa announced Qatar’s 21-member squad for this month’s Asiad and the four players are part of the two Qatari teams which will feature in the ACL, Al Duhail and Al Sadd.
The national squad left for Jakarta yesterday, and will compete in Group B during the Games which will begin tomorrow, eight days before the opening ceremony of the Asiad. Group B also includes Thailand, Uzbekistan and Bangladesh.
Al Anabi face Uzbekistan on August 14 in their first match.
All countries participating at the Asian Games will be represented by a U-23 squad with three overaged players and the top two from each group will advance to the round of 16.
