Doha, Qatar: A student team representing the State of Qatar has participated for the first time in the 66th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025, hosted in Australia, from July 10 to 20.

The event gathered approximately 600 students from 112 countries around the world.

The Olympiad targets high school students with strong abilities in pattern recognition, logical problem solving, statistics, probability theory, and big data analysis to envision the future.

It also serves as a platform for cultural exchange and the development of mathematical skills among students. Moreover, it provides a valuable opportunity for top universities worldwide to scout young talents and encourage them to pursue careers in mathematics and sciences.

The Qatari team consisted of six students: Majed Hamad Al-Malki and Mohammed Abdullah Al-Obaidli from Qatar Science & Technology Secondary School for Boys; Osama Anas from Hassan Bin Thabit Secondary School for Boys; Malek Ahmed Abdelraouf from the Religious Preparatory Secondary Institute for Boys (awarded an honorary certificate); Abdullah Reda from Tariq Bin Ziyad Secondary School for Boys; Haya Al-Abdullah from Qatar Technical Secondary School for Girls. The team was accompanied by Jameela Mohammed Yousuf (Team Leader), Yousef Mohammed Jaradat (Deputy Leader), and supervisors Hassan Hussein and Weam Asaad.

The national team underwent an intensive training and preparation program throughout the academic year, led by local and international trainers under the supervision of mathematics supervisors from the Educational Guidance Department at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.

This participation builds upon the achievements of Qatari students in regional mathematics olympiads at the Gulf and Arab levels, where they have earned numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals. It also aligns with the Ministry’s efforts to enhance students’ capabilities and foster a generation of innovators capable of competing globally.

The IMO competition spans two consecutive days, with each day featuring a 4.5-hour exam consisting of three challenging mathematical problems in the fields of algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. The total score is 42 points, with each problem worth 7 points. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in a 1:2:3 ratio based on rankings, while honorary certificates are presented to students who solve at least one problem perfectly.

It is worth noting that the International Mathematical Olympiad was first held in 1959 in Romania with only seven participating countries.

Since then, it has grown to include over 100 countries from five continents.

The next IMO is scheduled to be held in Shanghai, China, from July 10 to 20, 2026.
