DOHA: The Government Communications Office (GCO) has highlighted a number of major achievements accomplished by in July.
In a post on its X account, the GCO noted that July marked several significant milestones, including Qatar’s official bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games and its strong performance in global peace and competitiveness rankings.
Qatar formally confirmed its intention to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) entering the dialogue phase with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) under the new host city selection process. Qatar stated that 95% of the necessary sports infrastructure is already in place, significantly strengthening its candidacy. The bid is part of a broader national vision to use the games as a platform for development — focusing on youth engagement, knowledge sharing, innovation, and sustainability — aligning with both Olympic ideals and Qatar’s national values.
If successful, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to host the Olympic Games.
In parallel with its Olympic aspirations, Qatar achieved a notable ranking in the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025, where it was placed first in the MENA region and 27th globally out of 163 countries — an improvement of two positions from the previous year. Qatar also ranked first among Arab nations and eighth globally in the “Societal Safety and Security” category, reflecting its robust peace and security indicators. This marks the seventh time Qatar has led the MENA region in the index’s nineteen-year history, highlighting the strength of its security framework and governance.
Further underlining its global competitiveness, Qatar made a breakthrough in the 2025 Global Competitiveness Report by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), securing the 9th position globally — it is the first time in the top ten. This rise from 11th place in 2024 demonstrates significant improvements in business efficiency, government performance, and economic strength. It also reflects the country’s commitment to long-term strategies such as the Third National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030.
On the social and youth empowerment front, the Qatar Youth Delegates to the United Nations Programme celebrated the graduation of its 2025 cohort. The ceremony organised by the Ministry of Sports and Youth in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs honoured 52 young men and women, with six selected as official youth delegates to the UN. This national initiative seeks to empower Qatari youth and elevate their role in global dialogue, reinforcing Qatar’s dedication to cultivating future leaders and shaping international policy.
Also in July, the School Innovation Incubators Initiative was launched by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Ministry of Sports and Youth, and the Qatar Scientific Club. The programme aims to nurture innovation and scientific thinking among students by providing access to cutting-edge facilities and training.
