Morocco World Cup bid delegation visits Qatar, meets top officials

DOHA: A high-level delegation from the Morocco 2026 FIFA World Cup bid team met with Qatar Football Association (QFA) President and other top officials, it was announced yesterday.

The delegation of Morocco’s 2026 FIFA World Cup bid team included Ms. Charafat Afailal, Minister of State for Water Affairs, Ms. Rkia Derham, Minister of State for Foreign Trade and Hamid Al-Suwairi, member of the Executive Office of the Moroccan Football Federation.

The delegation met with Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, President of QFA, along with Vice President Saud Al Mohannadi.

Hassan Abdullah Al-Thawadi, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, was also present.

Vice- President of the Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence was also present during the meeting in which the officials exchanged souvenirs.

The Qatar officials congratulated the guest delegation as the Morocco World Cup bid was approved to enter the final vote.

Morocco are competing with a combined World Cup bid from North America that includes the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be decided on June 13 at the 68th FIFA Congress to be held in Moscow.

Meanwhile a host of delegates from Qatar are heading for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

A Qatar Football Association (QFA) delegation is heading to Russia to gain necessary organizational expertise ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

FIFA will hold a three-day workshop for associations contest managers with the participation of officials from the International Federation and the Russian Federation and representatives of QFA.

QFA delegation includes Ahmed Al Adsani, Director of Competitions Department of the Qatar Stars League, Ali Hammoud, Chairman of Competitions Department in QFA as well as Abdullah Jassim and Ahmad Al Abbasi.

Hamoud will be in the Russian city of Sochi, while Al Adsani and Abbasi will be in Moscow and Jassim in St Petersburg.

Josoor Institute, a Qatari centre of excellence for the sports and events industries that is inspired and developed by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), is sending two of its delegates to attend the World Cup in Russia.

These delegates will be part of the SC’s Observation Programme and will gain first-hand experience of what it takes to put together a major sporting event.

The two delegates – Iman Al Khamri and Hamad Al Kuwari – are both Qatari nationals who have previously attended several of Josoor Institute’s programmes and workshops.

Al Khamri is a graduate from Qatar University and Josoor Institute’s flagship Football and Sports Management Professional Diploma.  As part of her 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Observation Programme, she will be based in Sochi.

Al Kuwari will be observing the 2018 World Cup in Moscow.
