Doha, Qatar: Qatari player Khaled Al-Jumaat won the Hyatt Plaza Open Blitz Chess Championship for Under-16 players, which concluded at Hyatt Plaza Mall after a one-day event organised by the Qatar Chess Federation.

The FIDE-rated tournament attracted 65 players and was played over seven rounds using the Swiss system with a time control of three minutes plus a two-second increment per move.

Al-Jumaat claimed the title with six points, edging India’s Alpin Sajan on tie-break after both players finished level on points. 

India’s John Jobsey took third place with 5.5 points, ahead of compatriot Ram Madinidi on tie-break. Saketh Konomalkathil and Hari Rajesh shared fifth and sixth places with 5.5 points each.

Among the Qatari players, Hamad Al-Kuwari finished eighth and Ibrahim Al-Janahi ninth, both with five points.

The Qatar Chess Federation and Hyatt Plaza honoured the top 10 finishers at the closing ceremony.

The tournament is part of the ongoing partnership between the federation and Hyatt Plaza to promote chess, nurture young talent and strengthen the sport’s growth in Qatar.

The Qatar Rapid Chess Championship for Qatari players, also featuring seven Swiss-system rounds, will be held today.
