Forty-four photographs depicting the link between science and art are featured at the ‘Art of Science’ exhibition which launched at the Cultural Village Foundation-Katara yesterday.

The exhibition, organised by Katara in collaboration with the Youth Hobbies Center and Qatar University (QU), was opened by the Katara Deputy General Manager and Head of Operations, Ahmad Al Sayed, with media personnel and educational representatives at the Youth Hobbies Center in attendance.

The exhibition explores the interplay between science and art and presents an artistic interpretation of the concept of scientific inquiry. The exhibition tastefully depicts the beauty of science as experienced by students, researchers and scientists working in scientific labs in schools and research institutions. By doing so, the display encourages students to enjoy the subject of science, rather than studying it purely to pass exams and get grades.

The photographs were captured in schools across the country and in the Centre of Advanced Materials (CAM) at QU.

The 2017 Art of Science exhibition comes under an educational programme called AL-Bairaq, an unconventional educational programme that aims to support Qatar’s commitment in developing a knowledge-based economy, enriching its human capital and improving its competitiveness through innovation, entrepreneurship, and applied research.

Through AL-Bairaq, students are selected, trained, and mentored to be research assistants at Qatar University.

The mission of the programme is projected at high school students, with the intention of helping them acquire a thorough understanding of research values, skills, and ethics, as well as develop self-reliance, self-confidence, and expand their vision of their own roles in the scientific community. AL-Bairaq transforms education by providing professional-level experiences for students and investing in their personal development.

The programme also contributes to the economic development of Qatar by addressing the global need for a new generation of scientists and a scientifically literate population.
