Qatar and Kazakhstan share bilateral relations marked by steady progress and promising potential. Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1993, both nations have cultivated a partnership characterised by mutual respect, trust and a shared desire to explore collaborative avenues.
The Embassy of the State of Qatar in Astana opened its doors in May 2008, whereas the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Doha opened in May 2007. Last year, the two countries celebrated the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between them. Diplomatic relations have been bolstered by frequent high-level visits. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has visited Kazakhstan three times, showcasing the depth of relations.
H H the Amir was awarded the Order of the Golden Eagle or “Altyn Qyran”, the highest order of the Republic of Kazakhstan in recognition of the strong relations between the two countries and their friendly peoples.
The state visit by President of the Republic of Kazakhstan H E Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to the State of Qatar yesterday marked a new milestone in developing the historical relations between the two countries. H H the Amir presented yesterday the Sword of the Founder, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani, to H E the President of Kazakhstan as a symbol of distinguished bilateral relations.
Trade serves as a crucial pillar of the diplomatic relations. Recent meetings of senior officials have emphasised enhancing investment and commercial cooperation, especially in sectors like agriculture, infrastructure, information technology and in several other sectors. Numerous agreements and memorandums of understanding solidify the cooperation in sectors like investment, trade, public health, and diplomatic training. The sessions of the Qatar-Kazakhstan Joint Higher Committee have yielded progress, aiming to increase trade volume and facilitate investment flows.
Beyond economic ties, cultural exchange forms a vital bridge between the two nations. Exhibitions and artistic collaborations promote mutual understanding and appreciation. Shared participation in international events further fosters a sense of camaraderie. The two countries signed a MoU for cooperation in the fields of social protection and development, the first executive programme for cooperation in the field of youth for the years 2024-2026, a MoU in the field of enhancing integrity and transparency, an agreement between Lesha Bank of Qatar and the Baiterek Venture Fund of Kazakhstan, a MoU that includes several projects related to energy, and a MoU to build a power generation station and a gas processing plant in the Kashagan Field.
By capitalising on shared goals and economic strengths, Qatar and Kazakhstan can further solidify their ties, contributing to a more prosperous and interconnected future.
