Harnessing AI ethically

Embracing the latest technology and weaving it into our daily lives for the development of society in general is the way to go for the future for any nation, which values sustainable and inclusive living for its citizens. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies and its potential to offer innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems has sparked interest across sectors. AI offers many benefits but can also have adverse effects on children if not managed properly. One of the primary concerns is exposure to inappropriate content through AI-driven platforms like social media and search engines. Algorithms may inadvertently promote harmful materials or reinforce stereotypes and biases present in the data they’re trained on. This can negatively affect a child's mental health, self-esteem, and worldview.

Another risk is data privacy. AI systems often collect vast amounts of personal data. Children may be particularly vulnerable to privacy violations, as they might not fully understand how their data is used or the potential risks involved. Additionally, AI-powered toys or educational tools may create an over-reliance on technology, limiting children's social development and critical thinking skills.

The Third National Human Rights Forum opened in Qatar yesterday stressed the need to develop a digital system that is more capable of protecting the rights and best interests of children, in a way that keeps pace with the rapid and changing growth in the digital world.

“Our responsibility today is to develop solutions and mechanisms that enable us to move towards positive paths, in which we enjoy the digitization of life without being exploited by it,” Minister of Social Development and Family H E Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad said.

To mitigate these effects, several steps can be taken. Parents and educators should ensure age-appropriate use of AI technologies, employing parental controls and content filters to shield children from harmful materials. It's essential to encourage balanced screen time and promote activities that foster creativity, critical thinking, and social interaction.

Education plays a key role in mitigation. Teaching children digital literacy, the responsible use of AI, and how to critically evaluate online content can empower them to navigate AI-driven environments safely and responsibly.

Embracing the power of AI and new technologies might be essential for future growth and to drive sustainable and inclusive development. Harnessing it in the right and ethical way is important for our children and for the future of our society.
