As the State of Qatar believed that to fight terrorism, which is a scourge that humanity suffers from, we have to address the root causes that lead to extremism and polarization due to authoritarian regimes’ repressive policies, sectarianism, and marginalization, poverty, unemployment, lack of education and development programmes...etc.
Corruption is also one of the crimes that stand as an impenetrable barrier in front of the development and evolution of people and creates economic and social gaps between the components of the same country, causing instability and a lack of security. Corruption is described as ‘epidemic that, if you do not fight it, will have devastating effects economically, politically, and socially, and leads to sabotaging all aspects of life’.
Fighting corruption is one of the principles that the State of Qatar is actively working on and has taken advanced steps at the national and international levels, by joining the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and by allocating an annual award bearing the name of the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Award aimed at raising awareness of the importance of eradicating corruption and encouraging the implementation of the decisive measures of the UNCAC, and honoring exceptional projects and efforts aimed at combating corruption.
Doha yesterday witnessed the ceremony of the sixth edition of the annual award bearing the name of the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award which was attended by the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. The ceremony which pays tribute to the winners every year is accompanied by the inauguration of a monument in the form of a huge metal hand, which takes a transparent shape, a symbol of fighting corruption, integrity, and cleanliness, and carrying a message to the corrupted entities to stop pursuing corruption.
The monument was unveiled in Dafna Park by the H H the Amir. H H the Amir also honoured several winners of the award from the UK, Italy, Lebanon, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, USA, Kenya and Nigeria.
Thus Qatar, not only combating corruption and raising awareness about the destructive aspect of this pandemic, but also has achieved advanced results in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for the year 2021 issued by Transparency International, as Qatar scored 63 points on the index, which made it rank second in the Gulf and Arab countries, and at the global level, the State of Qatar ranked 31st out of 180 countries and territories included in the index.
