Global standards, local identity

As education systems become increasingly interconnected, the challenge facing many countries is not how to access global knowledge, but how to ensure that such knowledge does not come at the expense of cultural identity. In an era where international curricula dominate many private schools, maintaining a strong connection to language, heritage, values, and national identity has become a pressing educational priority.

The launch of a new accreditation framework under the Rasekh initiative, an educational pathway designed to balance international academic standards with national identity, language, and values, reflects a growing recognition that educational excellence and cultural rootedness are not mutually exclusive. Rather, they are complementary goals that can reinforce one another when approached thoughtfully.

International education has long been valued for providing students with access to globally recognised academic standards, diverse perspectives, and pathways to higher education around the world. These advantages remain important in preparing young people for an increasingly competitive and interconnected future. However, education is about far more than academic achievement alone. It also shapes how students understand themselves, relate to their communities, and contribute to society.

A balanced educational model should therefore cultivate both global competence and a strong sense of belonging. Students who are confident in their cultural identity are often better equipped to engage with the wider world. They can participate in international conversations without losing sight of their roots, values, and heritage. The new framework seeks to address this challenge by encouraging international schools to integrate Arabic language learning more deeply into educational practice while embedding local culture, values, and community priorities within the learning experience.

Too often, discussions about identity and culture in education remain largely aspirational. By creating a structured pathway for schools to demonstrate their commitment and progress, the framework transforms broad principles into practical educational outcomes. This can help ensure that cultural and linguistic objectives are not treated as peripheral activities but become an integral part of school life.

Ultimately, education should prepare young people not only for the jobs of tomorrow but also for the responsibilities of citizenship and community life. By strengthening the relationship between global learning and local identity, this initiative offers a promising vision of education that is internationally competitive, culturally grounded, and socially meaningful. In doing so, it helps ensure that future generations remain firmly rooted even as they reach confidently toward the world.
