DOHA: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the reconciliation agreement signed in Doha on Monday between the Libyan tribes of Tuareg and Tebu, praising Qatar’s efforts in this regard under the leadership of Emir
H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
“The agreement is an important step and a positive development in the path towards ending violence between the social components in the south of Libya,” Ban said in a statement, welcoming all initiatives that complement UNSMIL’s (United Nations Support Mission in Libya) work to end the Libyan conflict.
“All such local initiatives aimed at ceasefire and reconciliation will need to be complemented by a nationwide political agreement to minimise the chances of more conflicts,” he added.
The UN chief said representatives of the two delegations in the negotiations deserve praise for the achievement, hailing Qatar’s role in facilitating talks.
He urged to complete such initiatives to help hasten the signing of a nationwide political accord.
The UN encourages Qatar to again play a constructive role to reach a political agreement in its current form, he said, urging the Libyan leaders to support the agreement.
Arab League Secretary-General Dr Nabil Al Arabi also welcomed the peace and reconciliation deal between the two Libyan tribes, Qatar News Agency reports.
In a statement yesterday, Al Arabi hoped that the agreement would contribute to achieving the desired progress in the comprehensive political dialogue between Libyan parties under the auspices of the UN.
He said the deal supports endeavours being made to achieve a national consensus towards the process of democratisation to ensure restoration of peace and stability for the Libyan people and preserve Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Tuareg and Tebu signed the agreement under the auspices of the Emir to end fighting in the town of Ubari in southwest Libya.
It was signed in Doha by the heads of the delegations of both tribes, in the presence of Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation Affairs
H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. A permanent ceasefire is part of the deal that also stipulates the return of the displaced people of Ubari to their homes, opening the public road to Ubari and ending all armed manifestations.
