DOHA: Qatar Charity (QC) has spent QR14.7m on various social causes inside Qatar during the first half of this year and managed to secure the release of 20 loan defaulters from jail after paying their debts.
More than 740 people have benefited from the local projects launched by the Department of Social Welfare and Local Development at QC in the country this year.
The money was spent on repaying loans of defaulters serving jail sentence upon the requests of their families as they were the only breadwinners.
The Department also paid for medical bills of poor patients, provided basic needs to needy families, monthly expenses for low-income families, and financial support to widows, divorcees, elderly, people with special needs, among others.
Loan defaulters, especially prisoners, have received the lion’s share from these aids valued at QR5.5m. A total of 56 individuals and families have benefited from the aid in this category and the initiative helped set free 20 prisoners from jail.
Around QR3.9m was used for helping patients and 72 people benefited. In addition, QR2.1m was allocated for helping 113 needy and low-income families to provide them with monthly expenses, while QR1m was given to support divorcees and their families.
About 120 individuals and families benefited from the aid worth QR2.5m. The largest share of the aid was distributed in the month of Ramadan for several causes, including the launch of Al Aqrabun Initiative, meeting the people’s needs in Ramadan and performing other social projects.
QC implemented several social projects for the development of the Qatari society to keep pace with the Qatar National Vision 2030, said Ali Atiq Al Abdullah, CEO of QC Department of Local Development.
There are two main aspects here:  the first one is the social welfare, which includes providing assistance to debtors, low-income persons, widows, patients and others. The second aspect includes funding projects, activities, and events for families and individuals in Qatar to develop their abilities in various fields, said Al Abdullah.
Al Aqrabun Initiative is one of the Qatari charitable initiatives in humanitarian work that was launched by the QC in the holy month of Ramadan.
A group of prominent and influential people in the Qatari society as well as some social activists provided support to low-income families and supported them psychologically and financially. Around 200 individuals and families have benefited and about QR1.7m was given to them.
