DOHA: Majority of patients at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)’s annual clinic in Sealine held during the 2015- 2016 camping season, were treated for mild and moderate illnesses, said a senior official.
The sixth annual clinic has provided clinical and emergency services for 25 weekends during the camping season between September 2015 and April 2016, treating a total of 734 patients.  Among them a total of 572 patients, including 483 Qatari and 251 expatriates, were treated for mild and moderate illnesses such as fever and stomach aches, diarrhea, cough, wounds, burns, asthma while six percent of severe cases treated included bone fractures and heart attacks, said Dr Hamed Ahmed Gharib, Emergency Physician at HMC.
The clinic was equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and medication to treat simple injuries and emergency cases, while critical trauma cases were referred to hospital by ambulance or LifeFlight helicopters. It was staffed with a physician and nurse 24 hours a day. The Ambulance Service also ensured 24-hour coverage of the area by providing ambulances and paramedics throughout.
A helipad had been built next to the clinic to facilitate transportation of seriously injured patients to hospital on helicopters.
More than 600 patients treated at the clinic were adult males while there were 42 females and 77 children. Most of the cases received full treatment at the clinic while 67 cases were transported to one of HMC’s hospitals for further treatment.
“We got plenty of cases with fractures because many ride buggy scooters during the camping season and get injured. Minor fractures, we manage to fix, because all doctors at the clinic are emergency consultants and they know how to treat simple fractures. But if the patient has compound fractures, or fractures with internal bleeding we send them to Hamad General Hospital for further treatment,” said Dr Gharib, who is also a Consultant at HMC’s Medical Administration Department.
“We also received patients with mild heart attacks. In such cases we stabilize the patient and send to the hospital. Such nine percent of patients were transported either to Hamad General Hospital or to the Al Wakra Hospital,” he added.
The total number of cases treated at the annual clinic in Sealine during the 2015- 2016 camping season had seen a slight increase by 25 patients. It was 719 during the previous season.
During the camping season every Thursday and Friday, six ambulances and four (4x4) vehicles were providing emergency services in the area. On Saturdays, three ambulances and three (4x4) vehicles were on service.
Also a Critical Care Paramedic were available at all times from Thursday to Saturday.
