Los Angeles---Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ryu Hyun-Jin was prescribed rest and rehabilitation for two weeks on Tuesday before a medical re-evaluation after the South Korean left-hander underwent an MRI exam.
The 27-year-old southpaw was found to have no change from a 2012 MRI by Dodgers team doctor Neal ElAttrache and will be looked at again in two weeks, just after the Major League Baseball season begins, to decide on how to progress in his throwing work to prepare him for the campaign.
Ryu has an inflamed left shoulder and will start the season on the injured list. He spent three-week stints at the start and finish of the 2014 season off games with left shoulder inflammation.
Ongoing uncertainty over Ryu could force the Dodgers to look for a replacement for their starting rotation. Short-term replacements are expected to fill-in over the first three weeks of the season because of scheduled days off in April.
The Dodgers also agreed to terms on a six-year contract for Cuban free agent second baseman Hector Olivera, according to the team website and the Los Angeles Times, each citing unnamed sources as the club had not confirmed a deal.
Both reports said the contract is worth $62.5 million and includes a $28 million signing bonus.
Olivera, who turns 30 on April 5, would not be the first Cuban defector to join the Dodgers, a list that also includes star slugger Yasiel Puig.
