Doha: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah confirmed that NHRC is closely monitoring the violations being committed against the Qatari people with a grave concern, including the bullying and entrenchment of hate speech during the tournament in a flagrant abuse of the international law and media charter of honour.
In statements, Al Attiyah said that such success is considered a historic accomplishment not only for Qatar, but for all Islamic and Arab states, indicating that, albeit such hosting has been the first-of-its-kind in the Arab and Islamic world since 1930, Qatar has not been spared from the indiscriminate attacks and fabrications which are candidly based on falsehoods and fallacies.
She added that human rights organisations and international parliaments underscored Qatar’s protection against any potential violations related to the World Cup facilities, pointing out that NHRC has been and continues to closely monitor everything raised about human rights situations in the country, and verifies the authenticity of the source regardless of its credibility.
Al Attiyah stressed that the majority of allegations that are being raised do not express the reality on the ground, notwithstanding Qatar has constantly called on numerous international human rights organisations and representatives of international parliaments to become aware of the facts in a more transparent way.
Her Excellency lauded the swift response of Qatar which opened its doors to all delegations and missions that were invited by NHRC to inspect human rights situations in the country, adding that every time NHRC calls on Qatar to approve the visit of any European and UN missions to the state, its response has been clear that doors remain open to all, because there is nothing to conceal.
Al Attiyah stated that Qatar’s international commitments have been expanded in the recent decade, and ratified seven core international conventions and protocols out of nine that are related to the protection and promotion of human rights, resulting in the acceleration of the steps to modify and develop the national legislations in conformity with its international commitments, indicating that all UN missions and European delegations that visited here lauded these legislative developments describing them as unprecedented in the region.
She added that some European delegations went on to say that what they had seen in Qatar, including the respect for human rights were not actually available in their European countries, while some representatives of European parliaments acknowledged that their countries do not respect the rights of labourers compared to Qatar.
Moreover, Al Attiyah indicated that NHRC will never stand still in front of baseless fabrications, underlining that FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 edition will be impressive by all accounts and all guests will enjoy their adequate rights in a way that do not compromise the cultures and norms of the host country.
And in line with its international commitments, NHRC is closely monitoring the hate speech which is being promoted in some European media institutions against Qatar and its people based on religion and belief, including the escalation of bullying behaviour against the country and its people in an explicit abuse of media code of conduct, stressing that such behaviour would foment the hate speech against Qatar and all Arab and Islamic peoples, calling for halting the unprofessional practices and uphold the media charter of honour.
