DOHA: Sheikh Eid Charitable Foundation (Eid Charity) has set up the third water purification plant in Al Askari neighbourhood of Al Falluja city in Iraq.
There has been severe shortage of clean water for long due to heavy shelling in several areas of the city that destroyed water installations, supply networks and homes.
The project is a part of GCC initiative for providing humanitarian aid to Iraqi people. The initiative is meant to provide clean water to 12,000 people of more than 2,000 families comprising children, women and senior citizens.
Thousands of gallons water were distributed to Iraqi displaced families in several areas housing them in collaboration with local partners. Donors from Qatar are contributing QR12.4m to the initiative.
A generous donor from Qatar financed to provide clean water to 600 families in Amriyat Al Falluja.
According to a team of Eid Charity that visited Iraq recently, about 60,000 displaced families are fighting for survival due to lack of drinking water in Amriyat Al Falluja. A bottle of 12 litters of water, required for a family for a day costs QR5. It means 60,000 people need QR300,000 per day and QR9m per month.
The water plants can purify 20,000 litters water per day. They are equipped with surface-water-wells.
Four vehicles were pressed into service to distribute water bottles. These projects are being implemented in Al Khalidiya, Al Ramadi, Amiriyat Al Falluja and Hiyat. The operation cost is QR1.2m for six months. A plant costs QR300,000.
