Doha: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) is proceeding with immediate humanitarian intervention to help the displaced Syrians fleeing the escalated armed clashes in northern Aleppo countryside towards the Syria-Turkey borders.
The intervention at a cost of $100,000 (QR365,000) is in response to the unexpected displacement wave, the below-zero temperatures and the risks to the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable civilians.
QRCS has set up a relief catering point in Bab Al Salama, which is hosting thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) and is receiving more and more from Aleppo countryside.
The first phase of the point near a crowded IDP destination on the Syria-Turkey borders lasts 16 days, providing 20,000 meals at the rate of 1,250 a day for all IDPs in the area.
Once the $30,171 phase is complete, the second phase will begin for another 16 days at another location.
In parallel, QRCS personnel in Syria reached out to families displaced from eastern Aleppo countryside and distributed 1,200 blankets and 600 mattresses to 190 families (1,100 people, mostly children, women and the elderly).
Through these provisions, QRCS seeks to meet the needs of the displaced Syrian families instantly and effectively and minimise the morbidity and mortality rates resulting from the bad weather by securing relief and warmth in these critical circumstances. It took action since day one to prepare an emergency intervention plan to contribute medical and relief aid, deploying medics and humanitarians to meet the needs of the displaced families.
A full-fledged mobile emergency clinic was set up in southern Aleppo countryside. Working 24/7 to provide medications and primacy healthcare, the clinic is moving around the locations of the poorest IDPs to cover as many beneficiaries as possible.
Established in 1978, QRCS is a member of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and several Gulf, Arab and Islamic assemblies. It works under the umbrella of seven international humanitarian principles: Humanity; impartiality; neutrality; independence; voluntary service; unity; and universality.
