Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Municipality launched a pioneering Smart Waste Container Project in Al Wakra Municipality, marking a major step forward in the country’s digital transformation agenda within the public services sector.
Director of General Cleanliness Department at the Ministry of Municipality Muqbil Madhhur Al-Shammari said that the project is part of the Ministry’s broader strategic vision to shift from traditional waste management methods to technology-driven solutions.
Speaking to Al Rayan TV recently, he said, “This program falls under the Ministry’s digital transformation strategy. We began by piloting the smart containers in Al Wakra, and thankfully the experiment has been successful,” he said.
He added that the next phase will see the system expanded to Doha’s Madinat Khalifa area and Muaither in Al Rayan Municipality.
The smart waste system is designed around three key components: the establishment of a unified command and control center, real-time vehicle and fleet tracking, and an integrated waste management platform.
The new containers are equipped with sensors that transmit data directly to waste collection vehicles, optimizing operations and reducing unnecessary trips.
“One of the major advantages is that the system helps drivers avoid closed roads, ongoing construction, or traffic obstacles by guiding them to the quickest routes,” Al-Shammari explained. “This cuts down both time and effort, making the process far more efficient.”
Environmental sustainability is also a central focus of the project. By improving routing efficiency and eliminating unnecessary collection trips, the smart containers significantly reduce carbon emissions—from both vehicle exhaust and decomposing waste.
“The state, represented by the Ministry of Municipality, is keen on integrating technology that enhances community wellbeing and environmental quality,” he said.
“This system lowers carbon emissions by ensuring waste is collected promptly and routes are shortened, which also reduces fuel consumption.”
Al-Shammari emphasized that adopting such technologies reflects Qatar’s commitment to enhancing quality of life and advancing eco-friendly urban services.
With the success of the pilot phase, residents in Doha and Al Rayan can soon expect the benefits of smarter, greener, and more efficient waste management solutions across their neighborhoods.
