New York: The United Nations warned of the expansion of deserts and the loss of green areas, pointing out that more than one third of the land area is vulnerable to excessive or inappropriate exploitation, which leads to severe climatic and developmental consequences.
The World Day to Combat Desertification is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality (LDN) is achievable through problem solving, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels," according to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
Over 250 million people are directly affected by desertification, and about one billion people in over one hundred countries are at risk, the UN reports. "These people include many of the worlds poorest, most marginalized and politically weak citizens."
