(The Sports Xchange) - New York Yankees right-hander Chase Whitley was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow sprain, the team announced Friday.
Whitley left in the second inning of Thursday's loss to Tampa Bay because of the elbow problem, which was later diagnosed as a sprain.
Whitley stepped in after Masahiro Tanaka went on the disabled list with wrist and forearm issues.
Whitley, 25, is 1-2 with a 4.19 ERA in four appearances, all as a starter.
His replacement in the rotation is expected to be Chris Capuano.
To fill Whitley's place on the roster, the Yankees called up right-hander Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Ramirez is 1-0 with 2.95 ERA and five saves in 13 appearances for Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, all in relief.
The Pittsburgh Pirates reinstated left-handed relief pitcher Antonio Bastardo from paternity leave.
Bastardo has a 6.43 ERA with nine strikeouts and four walks in seven innings this season.
To make room on the roster, the Pirates optioned left-hander Bobby LaFromboise to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton worked seven innings in a rehab start at Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.
Morton allowed two runs (one earned) on 11 hits while walking none and striking out eight. He is due to arrive in Chicago on Saturday and could come off the 15-day disabled list this weekend.
