The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) SecretaryGeneral Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah has called for concrete national, regional and global action to strengthen the principles of international legitimacy of the human rights.
In a speech on the occasion of the Human Rights Day, which falls on December 10 every year, the NHRC Secretary-General said that the importance of human rights stems from "our Islamic religion, which are universal, and indivisible." She added that the Qatari Constitution and national laws consolidate these rights, stressing that Qatar spared no effort, under the wise leadership of the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, in maintaining and respecting and promoting these rights.
She noted that the NHRC, since its inception, has been carrying out its mandated role in the dissemination, promotion and protection of human rights, and has made several achievements and faced some challenges too, but it is keen to communicate, coordinate and cooperate with all government departments and institutions of the civil society in a way that makes it more capable to exercise all terms of reference and achieve the desired objectives of its establishment. She said that as a result, the NHRC has received a rating category (A) from the World Alliance of National Institutions for Human Rights, for five years, which was re-adopted in 2015 to the same degree for another five years ending in 2020. She said that this category is granted only to institutions that enjoy independence, impartiality and credibility in the full performance of the functions assigned to it.
The Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all states and interested organisations to observe 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.
This year, Human Rights Day calls on everyone to stand up for someone's rights because disrespect for basic human rights continues to be widespread in all parts of the globe and messages of intolerance and hatred prey on our fears. Humane values are under attack.
