DOHA: Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi yesterday visited the Doha North Sewage Treatment Plant and reviewed work progress.
He was accompanied by Engineer Jalal Yousef Al Salhi, Director, Infrastructure Affairs, Ashghal, and other officials from Ashghal’s Infrastructure Affairs and Assets Affairs .
The Minister was briefed on the QR3.63bn project and its progress, engineering and construction techniques used in its implementation, components and advantages of the new treatment plant and the thermal drying plant, the plants’ advanced systems, and works being implemented.
The Doha North Sewage Treatment Works (STW) is one of the most prominent treatment plants. It uses advanced treatment techniques such as ultrafiltration and ultra-violet technologies to produce high quality treated water which can be used in irrigation.
The Doha North STW is in Umm Salal Ali, 25km to the north of Doha.
The first phase of the project includes construction of the main treatment plant for the reception and treatment of sewage, which has been designed to treat up to 245,000 cubic metres of sewage a day, serving a projected population of over 900,000 by 2020.
The second phase includes construction of a Thermal Drying Plant (TDP) within the Doha North STW to processes sludge — the solid materials generated from the sewage treatment process to dispose them according to international standards for safe disposal. Construction of the TDP is substantially completed and is going through final commissioning.
The TDP includes four thermal dryers being tested utilising sludge generated at the Doha North STW and the Doha West STW.
