DALLAS: Ron Washington made a surprise resignation announcement yesterday, leaving his post as manager of the Texas Rangers for “personal” reasons, the Major League Baseball team announced.
The 62-year-old had led the club since the start of the 2007 season. But he guided the Rangers to a 53-87 record in 2014, the worst record in any of his more than seven seasons as the manager.
On the day of his announcement, Texas was in last place in the AL West, their lowest standing since Washington was named manager.
“I have submitted my resignation from the job I love -- managing the Rangers -- to devote my full attention to addressing an off-the-field personal matter,” Washington said.
“As painful as it is, stepping away is what’s best for me, my family.”
Tim Bogar has been appointed interim manager for the remainder of the season.
“We accept Ron’s decision and are grateful for his many contributions to the Rangers organisation over the last eight years,” Rangers GM Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers had enjoyed some success under Washington.
They had finished fourth in 2007, going 75-87, then placed second two consecutive years before winning back-to-back division and league crowns in the 2010-11 season.
