Championing global discussion

In December, as the weather turns cooler, many of world’s top decision makers and policy leaders will head to Doha for “Reimagining Governance In A Multipolar World,” which is the theme for the 2-day Doha Forum.

The much-anticipated global event has earned global reputation due to participation of top policy institutions, international thought leaders and decision makers. It is, as H E Lulwah Al Khater, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar and Executive Director of Doha Forum, put it “region’s largest open platform for global discussion with carefully curated topics that are meant to reflect global concerns, bringing them to the forefront of discussion.”

Doha Forum was established in 2000 and over the years has seen many thought-provoking discussions over wide ranging global challenges. The presence of stakeholders who are responsible or can influence policy changes means the forum has seen many actionable suggestions to various issues. In 19 years, Doha Forum has managed to earn a very high standing among global policy events due to the quality of discussions and participants.

This edition will also see the launch of the Doha Forum Award, given for the first time in 2019 to an individual or organization that demonstrates outstanding achievements rooted in the core values of Doha Forum — dialogue, diplomacy and diversity. The winner will be announced at Doha Forum this December.

We have been witnessing incidents at the global level where some nations are taking unilateral decisions in matters which will impact many other nations, sometimes the entire world. There have been instances of global treaties getting stuck on drawing boards due to inelastic nature of a few. What we need in the current time, where we are witnessing a lot of global upheaval, is what Doha Forum puts forth: “We collectively need to think of a holistic governance system that is moral, cooperative, and practical.”

This year Doha Forum has a new strategic partner - The Royal Institute of International Affairs, widely known as Chatham House. It has also renewed prior strategic partnerships with the International Crisis Group, the European Council on Foreign Relations and the Munich Security Council.

The forum will discuss relevant and topical subjects like migration, refugees, climate change, changing world leaderships and the rise of new global powers. The forum will surely help form a network of thoughts and directions, a significant step towards reimagining a “global governance that addresses our collective needs and priorities.”
