Qeatar is one of the countries that is showing fastest economic growth rates and expected to continue expanding with the same high level of growth or more in the coming years. This is being achieved by implementing large-scale projects worth billions of dollars including projects related to infrastructure development, roads and construction of buildings, hospitals and schools.
So far, hundreds of mega projects have been materialised and the pace of development projects will continue until the 2022 FIFA World Cup for its preparation as the government allocated over $200bn for the related projects.
Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani inaugurated this year large-scale projects such as the Qatar National Museum, Um Al Houl Power Plant, new Trauma and Emergency Center at Hamad General Hospital and many others. Achieving the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the transformation of the country’s infrastructure projects is placing the nation among the most advanced countries.
The State Budget for the year 2020, which will be effective from January 1, 2020 has allocated almost 43 percent of the total expenditure for ‘Major Projects’ showing an increase of 0.5 percent compared to 2019. This reflects Qatar’s determination to provide sufficient financial support to complete the major projects in health and education and 2022 World Cup projects.
According to the budget, the launch of the multi-billion dollar Sharq Crossing project connecting Hamad International Airport to the iconic cultural village, Katara, and West Bay remain the most significant projects which reflects the government’s confidence in its longterm growth. The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is the body responsible for the implementation of the national development vision along with all authorities. It is managing and coordinating projects with billions of dollars adopting best practices in developing projects.
Currently, Ashghal is working on a wide range of infrastructure projects across the country, including highways, and expressways, and the local roads & drainage projects. Ashghal announced yesterday that it has opened the 2.5km carriageway of East Industrial Street Extension Project two months ahead of schedule to include the second longest bridge in Qatar with a length of 1.7 km.
The project is located between East Street 33 Interchange on Industrial Area Road and Aba Al Sleel Interchange on G Ring Road, where the new opening will provide a free flow of traffic between Hamad Port Road, G Ring Road, Industrial Area Road, Salwa Road and Al Furousiya Street. Ashghal has indicated that 87 percent of the East Industrial Street project has been completed, with the remaining parts to be opened within the second quarter of 2020 to include three signalized intersections, service roads, pedestrian tunnels, pedestrian and cycle paths.
