Today is the day Qatar has been waiting for some time as the world’s top athletes will battle for medals in their chosen beats.
Today, IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 kicks off in front of thousands of home fans and visitors from around the world, who will be a part of the high octane 10-day sports festival.
To organize the first World Athletics Championships in the region is a proud moment for Qatar as the country has been investing heavily to develop world-class sporting infrastructure in the last couple of decades.
This has helped Doha to stage some of the world’s top sporting events in various disciplines like tennis, golf, motorsports, gymnastics, swimming among others. Qatar has also hosted top-billed athletic events like the Diamond League events and staging Doha Worlds will add another feather to its sporting achievements.
The organisers have worked meticulously on every aspect of the championship for years now and the result can be seen on the ground. Many government departments have chipped in to get Doha ready to host one of the world’s biggest sporting spectacle. Now it’s the turn of the fans to celebrate these athletes, who are the best among the best, vying each other for the top spot. Hosting the championship only in the evening is a good decision as fans can avoid peak sun and children can head to the Khalifa International Stadium with parents after finishing their classes. There are many fun events planned for the full family at the fan zones and during the break.
The refurbished Khalifa International Stadium has a unique cooling system to maintain comfortable temperature inside the stadium for the participants. The World Championships will be the third major athletics event, which the Khalifa International Stadium will host after the innovative cooling system was installed. The system was also used during the Asian Athletics Championships and Doha Diamond League earlier this year.
As around 2,000 participants start their journey to stardom in their chosen event, thousands of volunteers will be working hard to make this as meticulous and smooth as possible. Qatar has always seen very good response from citizens and residents when it comes to volunteering for big events and Doha Worlds is no exception. Let us welcome all the athletes, accompanying officials and visiting fans to witness the sporting spectacle and enjoy Qatari hospitality. The Peninsula wishes all the very best to every athlete and may the best woman/man win.
