The whole world was listening with rapt attention when the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani addressed the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday. Several heads of states and governments from across the world were lending their ears to the words of a unique leader whose vision and wisdom earned his people the respect and dignity they deserve despite their country being placed under an unjust siege by its close neighbours for none of its faults.
H H the Amir conveyed to the world from the podium of the UNGA that Qatar is far better and stronger than it was before the blockade and the crux of the country’s steadfast foreign policy calls for the need to resolve differences through dialogue away from the language of threat and intimidation and its desire to take all necessary measures to face the challenges and address their negative impacts on societies and international peace and security.
H H the Amir’s speech highlighted the steadfast growth Qatar has achieved thanks to the cohesion and solidarity behind the political leadership which alleviated the effects of the blockade imposed by the neighbours who were supposed to be the brothers. H H the Amir’s address dwelt upon the pains and worries of the Arab nation, especially the Palestinian issue, the worrying situation in Yemen, Syria, Libya and Iraq, the issues of terrorism which threatens the entire world, human rights, development and peace.
His words put forth a roadmap through which the international community can address the various issues and conflicts around the world through peaceful means highlighting the important and relevant role the United Nations and its different agencies can play in resolving crises.
H H the Amir’s pledge to provide quality education to another one million girls by 2021 and his announcement of Qatar’s agreement with the UN to fight cholera in Yemen by supporting projects related to combating the causes of the disease outbreak and to halts its spread were hailed by the international community. H H the Amir also extended an invitation to international human rights organisations to establish their regional offices in
Qatar and he expressed Qatar’s willingness to host an international conference to tackle the challenges posed by the developments in information technology such as freedom of access and the need to protect the privacy of citizens from the risk of hacking.
The address, which touched upon almost every issue that vexes the humanity as a whole or pertaining to a particular region or country, bears witness to the wisdom and farsightedness of the true leader of a nation who not only pays close attention to details, but also finds ways to resolve real issues with tangible solutions. Yes, the Amir of the State of Qatar is a true leader whom others can follow as a real model.
