New academic year

Today is the first day of the new academic year 2019/20 and over 300,000 students in some 900 schools are expected to rejoin the reopened schools after summer break started in early July.

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has completed its preparations in all fields to create convenient and comfortable school environment for the students, teachers and parents.

As part of these preparations, the Ministry yesterday concluded the sixth edition of the annual campaign “Back to School” held at Mall of Qatar and KidZania Doha, under the slogan ‘With Education We Build Qatar’. The campaign was held from August 16 to 24.

The Director of Public Relations and Communication Department at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Hassan Al Mohammadi, honoured the parties involved in the Back to School Campaign and presented certificates of thanks and appreciation to the representatives of the partners.

The campaign was organised in cooperation with government and private sectors including Mall of Qatar, KidZania Doha, Qatar Unified Awareness Team, Your Health First from Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar, and in partnership with Karwa Transport Company. The event witnessed big turnout of parents and children throughout the campaign days.

The activities of the event attracted the attention of children and students participated in the well designed and specific education goals activities presented by the Ministry and its partners to help students develop certain skills and prepare them for the new academic year after summer break.

These include activities such as Learning Management System (LMS) which is an up-to-date educational system with modern international standards that allow students, teachers, parents and principals to use and access their time-saving features.  Other partners such as the Directorate of the Traffic Department and Hamad Medical Corporation have also announced their readiness to deal with security, safety and health requirements for the new academic year.

The General Directorate of Traffic has set up “plan to ease traffic jams around schools to facilitate movement in the streets when students enter and exit”.

The plan covers all areas in the country particularly areas which have more schools and densely populated. “In such areas, we will deploy more traffic patrols,” according to the First Lieutenant Khalid Abdullah Al Kuwari, officer at Traffic Patrols and Investigation Department at the General Directorate of Traffic.

Al Kuwari also pointed out that the department will conduct awareness campaign which will include distribution of awareness booklets and brochures starting form the second day of the school reopening and will continue for two weeks to educate students and partners on traffic safety rules.

For its part, the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in an advisory emphasised the importance of the selection of an ‘ideal school bag’ for children’s health.
