Educating the marginalised

H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser’s dream of and determination on providing quality education to the less privileged children around the world got a fillip when Education Above All (EAA) Foundation announced raising a handsome amount during the Ramadan fund-raising campaign. The campaign had elicited overwhelming support from individuals, institutions and the business community in Qatar, who lived up to the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan through generous donations for a noble cause. The campaign held under the theme “No Child Left Out’ was aimed at supporting projects and initiatives to assist marginalised and impoverished children to access quality and baseline education.

Pursuant of this year’s fund-raising programme, QR15m will be channelled to the efforts and worldwide beneficiaries of EAA’s Educate a Child (EAC) and Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) educational programmes, which target marginalised and impoverished children with access to quality educational facilities and resources.

The EAA Foundation’s campaign, which started on May 15 with a special episode on Qatar TV’s Hayatuna programme, was also aimed at raising awareness about the Foundation’s global projects for children and youth.

Senior Representative of Fundraising Department at EAA Foundation, Mohamed Al Naama, said: “This fund-raising round’s success takes on a different meaning this year, thanks to the support of our partners here and across the globe, we could successfully reserve places for out of school children in the educational system and a better chance for their future. Theses numbers are a proof that no ambition is too big when people harness their energy, resources and efforts toward the greater good of their communities and others that need it.”

For the past several years, The EAA has relentlessly been making tremendous efforts to eradicate illiteracy among the less privileged children around the world, especially the children in conflict zones and vulnerable communities, who were bereft of their right to education for none of their fault.

The EAA attracted worldwide appreciation when on April 28, 2018, its Chairperson H H Sheikha Moza  announced in New York that the EAC programme succeeded in its objective of helping 10 million of the most marginalised out of school children to receive quality, primary education. During the event  at the New York library, H H Sheikha Moza said that since the project began, EAC had participated in 82 partnerships across 50 countries. They leveraged together a $1.8bn investment. A third of that sum was from the government of Qatar.

This itself testifies to the importance the State of Qatar places on the value of education, whether it is for citizens or for people across the world. Qatar has invested billions of dollars in education in Qatar and elsewhere, by establishing universities of highest standards and other educational institutions. The State through Qatar Foundation and programmes such as EAC is providing education and employment opportunities for children from countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, Palestine, Syria, Jordan Somalia, Turkey and Lebanon to name a few. After crossing the 10 million milestone the programme is still galloping forward in its bid to provide all the children their right to education.
