The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy is not only making arrangements from construction of world class stadiums to ensuring other related logistics to hold a wonderful mega sporting event in Qatar – 2022 FIFA World Cup - but also doing some other extraordinary jobs in the form of its legacy projects.
Generation Amazing is one of them. Generation Amazing, as SC defines it on its official website, has been changing lives since 2010, when it was established during Qatar’s bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Following Qatar winning hosting rights, the programme was enthusiastically taken up by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.
Generation Amazing uses football for development initiatives to address social issues in countries with an identified need, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through the construction of community football pitches, the delivery of comprehensive football for development training and the involvement of young people, the programme reaches some of the world’s most excluded people, especially those experiencing high levels of deprivation. It also promotes sustainable behaviours among young people in Qatar and across the region.
Last week Generation Amazing launched its first football pitch in India. Located next to a school in Jamsher, Punjab State, the pitch will host Generation Amazing’s football for development programmes. It will also provide a safe and sustainable space to play to more than 20,000 young people.
“We are proud to inaugurate our first Generation Amazing football pitch in India, and to continue to make a positive impact on the lives of young people in Jamsher and the surrounding areas,” said Afraa Al Noaimi, Acting Executive Director of Generation Amazing.
“Our football for development programme has made significant strides since it was launched in India earlier this year across a number of locations and cities, and this pitch opening will provide a tangible social and human legacy to this area for future generations. We encourage all the young girls and boys in the area to join our programme and make the most of the opportunities to learn life skills and important sporting values through football.”
This is the 27th football pitch to be launched by Generation Amazing following similar projects in Lebanon, Syria, Nepal, Pakistan and Jordan.
Since its launch, thousands of people have benefitted from Generation Amazing project not only in Qatar but in many countries of the world. There is no doubt that Qatar 2022 will be the most successful FIFA World Cup in history of football and at the same time it will always be remembered for far-reaching impacts of its legacy projects.
